Re: (TV) Tom Verlaine and drummers

this is a subject that we always came back to discuss ,in my opinion those
eighties Tom`s records could been waaaay better if recorded properly ,more
live with with a band ... hearing those songs live is an enormous difference ,
even if you prefer Billy over JD ,they were a tight band as they come at the
time ,even Tom is more focused and sharp ... i suppose a lot it has to do with
Tom not being able to direct the mix ,as the label don`t let him ...in
fairness a lot of the record of that era have these kind of problems , and
Verlaine ones still manage to sound good after all...
is also revelatory how
quickly they have been made ,Jimmy Rip told me ,that they entered the studio
sometimes , without knowing the material ,and Tom just say to him " try eight
of this and four of that " ,that rushed kind of thing ....JD don`t play on
alot of these albums either ,Jimmy also told me that for "words on the front "
he assambled a backing band with friends of him ,he wasn`t very clear about in
wich tracks and albums he did play ,but he claims Virgin never pay them for "
a miller`s tale " to this day ...
i always hear a duality in those albums
sound ,take "words ... " ,for example ,you have a set of songs with nice ,real
drums ,as "coming apart " ,oppossed to others with the sterile ,programmed
sounding drums ,such as "present arrived " ...it happens to me with "cover "
,"words " ,"flashlight " and "the wonder " ...
the claustrophobic sound of "
dreamtime " doesn`t do much for me ,something on it fatigues my ears a little
,it`s not bad ,still ....
i like the production in Television third`s ,also
,but i feel the bass sound could be more defined ,less diffuse ...
wich i
really like is "songs and other things " ,i may have listened it on a daily
basis for such a long time ...the drumming on this is killer too ...
Tom `s
first one sounds very classic seventies and classy ...on par with Television`s
first two ...
also find the instrumental discs very enjoyable ,"warm and cool
" sounds like a very good Rudy Van Gelder recording ,and Billy ,of course is
really unique ...on a recent clip
from a Television show ,filmed from a
balcony ,you can really appreciate this ...

Asunto: (TV) Tom Verlaine and drummers

Does anyone else
ever feel that Verlaine's '80's albums might have
sounded "better" (whatever
that means) with a different drummer (say,
Ficca) in the band?
I'm thinking
of Richard's recent interview comment along the lines of,
"If you listen to
Tom's albums, ...could have been a drum machine!" Jay
Dee D. is a great
/driving/ live drummer, but quite an 'anonymous' one
and I don't enjoy his
playing as much as Ficca's, or Mitchell
behind/around Hendrix.

I'm listening
to 'Prove It' as I write this and I love the way Ficca's
drumming in that
song is always on the spot but always busy enough to be
interesting.

I guess
we'll never find out unless the new incarnation of Television
should play
some Verlaine solo songs.
