and he just seems an ass quite basically. good point on the interviews
too, i'm still trying to get over reading an interview with Damien
Jurado-whose music I love
I'm reminded of something Tom Verlaine/Television's manager John Telfer
said in an interview in 1992, re. Tom:
"A few people said, "Donbt work with him, hebs difficult". But
hebs an artist - and no more difficult than anybody whobs
intelligent and doesnbt stand fools."
and Tom's line in '87:
"The press doesn't deserve anything but lies."
The way people like Tom and Reed come over in interviews might just be
partly down to the poor standard of most music journalism (the "fools"
mentioned above?). How many times will Reed have been asked about Andy
Warhol or Nico, or Tom or Richard about Marquee Moon or (shudder) Punk?
Could be that if someone asked Lou Reed his opinion on how to build the
perfect fuzz box they might discover that he's a charming, chatty,
informative gent.
On the other hand, the stories of him gradually removing Quine's work
from the recordings suggest that he's a small-minded control freak with
an insecurity complex.
My original comment that he's "a prick" should really have been that
that all the stuff I've read about him suggests that he's a prick.
Doesn't take anything away from "THE VELVET UNDERGROUND AND NICO",
though.
