Important news: Rolling back the years

Hello to my fellow fans,

I wanted to let you know that after 20+ years, the Marquee Moon Mailing List is drawing to a close later this month. This is a decision being made for both practical and technical reasons. For the latter, the software used to run the list is increasingly hard to maintain, and while Joe Hartley has been exceedingly gracious in keeping the list alive and running all of these years at his own expense, it doesn't make sense to keep it going any longer. This gets to the practical reason, which is that this list simply isn't very active any more.

I'm happy to say that the online Television community isn't dead; in fact, thanks to social media, it's probably more active than it's ever been in the last 30 years, thanks to Facebook, Instagram, etc, and more importantly thanks to an ongoing stream of reissues, retrospectives, covers, and ongoing work and touring by Richard Lloyd and Television's many admirers. I think this ensures that the Television online community will continue to grow and stay active in the years to come.

Likewise, the Facebook group I set-up for Television a few years ago is more active than ever, with close to 1000 members today, and growing each week. You can find it here: Marquee Moon: A Television Channel | Facebook

There are also a few Instagram accounts dedicated to Television. One of my favorites is here: https://www.instagram.com/television_band

This mailing list has hosted countless interesting and vibrant discussions over the last 20+ years. There were days when 25+ messages a day was not uncommon, and I learned a ton from my fellow fans this way. Thankfully, the archives for those discussions will remain online and searchable going forward, thanks again to Joe Hartley, at https://www.obbard.com/tvlist-archive/

(As an aside, Joe and I are also working at keeping Keith Allison's amazing Television website "The Wonder" up and running, too).

This list started in the fall of 1998 when I realized I'd missed my first (at that time) chance to see Tom play live locally. I realized that we needed a way to regularly share Television news with fellow fans, and this list was born. Over the past 25 years, this list has accompanied me (virtually) to multiple Television concerts, Verlaine and Lloyd shows, and quite a few bands and many albums that I only learned about through the list itself. I've also had the chance to meet and make many friends through the list over the years. I'm grateful to both Joe, for keeping this alive for so long, and also to all of you, for sharing your enthusiasm and love for this still-fairly obscure but amazing band of musicians and songwriters with all of us over the years.

See you all on the interwebs,
Phil
