I saw this show here in Chicago last night, with a different set of local and
quasi-local guest artists, including Tim Rutili, Sally Timms, Ed Roeser, Josh
Caterer and Gary Louris. Mike Mills and Marshall Crenshaw were advertised on
the bill but never turned up. Some lovely heartfelt performances if
predictably (and forgivably in my book) under-rehearsed.  Definitely worth
checking out if you are a fan of Big Star (though imo Third is a difficulty
and dirge-y album for the uninitiated).  Of course we got the power-pop "hits"
from the first two albums to close out the set, and even a nice version of
Chris Bell's I Am the Cosmos sung by Louris.  Jody Stephens was also in great
voice, but the big revelation to me was the guy who acted as MC, Django
Haskins. Great singer and an especially great harmony singer.

Richard Lloyd is scheduled to play in the "orchestrated live performance" of
Big
Star's Third this Sunday evening at Central Park Summerstage (free!). Looks to
be a very cool event, assuming the weather is OK. (There's a threat of
intermittent thundershowers.) Other folks on the bill include Mike Mills,
Mitch
Easter, Chris Stamey, Marshall Crenshaw, Big Star's own Jody Stephens. I hope
to
go, assuming I'm feeling well enough (fighting tonsilitis).
