Yes -- I think this hits the nail on the head.

I am reminded of a quote I read somewhere about Television's label-mates of an 
earlier decade, Love: "They would have been huge if it only it hadn't been for 
their personalities".

The bottom line with Richard and Tom, and I'm not thrilled about it but it
won't go away, is that both of them are kind of dicks.

Richard's the better player.

Tom's the more complete artist.

They're great together on the rare occasions when that's been able to
happen, which are infrequent because they're both kind of dicks.

Almost everything else is details.
