Not to beat this to death :>) , but...
Regarding Blackmonk's "I don't think they'd want to put out an album that
featured the guy
who isn't in the band any more."
I said that in reference to the solos. There's a difference between someone
playing as part of an ensemble and someone being the featured soloist.
I will give you that it has been done on occasion, but things have changed
since 1964, when The Yardbirds released material that Clapton played lead on
after Jeff Beck replaced him. Television don't have a record company pushing
them to put out new product (Presumably. If they do, that company is really
bad at it.), and they're not under the gun to release more material to
capitalize on a hit.
I don't think that after Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen, their next album
included any tracks where David Lee Roth sang lead.
Bands have been putting out albums since the begining of recorded time
that included the
playing by a member that had left the group.
Re: "If Richard Lloyd played any of the solos, I'd guess that Tom would
replace those."
I disagree. Although T.V. may be partly (or even mostly!?!) responsible
for Richard leaving
Television due to Tom being such a control freak , not allowing Richard
input and to be part of
decision making, I really doubt T.V. would stoop so low to erase all of
Richard's guitar parts
and re-record them.
Again, I said the solos, not all of his guitar parts.
Anyway, it would only be low if the rerecorded parts were the same thing
that Richard played. Otherwise, it would just be making the sound a better
reflection of what the band currently sounds like. Why would anyone erase
one of the musicians from a tape and then have the people recording new
parts play like that musician? That's just silly.
Remember, these songs haven't been released yet, so there's no finalized
version. Officially, they're still works in progress.
If nothing else Tom's too freakin' lazy to start all over.
All he'd have to do is solo over the backing tracks that already exist. Do
those tracks exist? What are we talking about here?
Moreover, on 1992's Television III,
Verlaine takes credit for the lyrics but gives full credit to the other 3
band members; rear
cover reads,"Songs" Tom Verlaine; Music: Television".
I know. I have the album. Are those writing credits, or does it mean that
Verlaine wrote the songs-"songs" isn't the same thing as "lyrics"-and the
entire band did the arrangements?
'Blackmonk', I'll tell you what, when the 4th album comes out if there's
none of Richard
Lloyd's guitar playing on it, then I'll buy you the cd [or internet
download] and mail it to
you.
"When?" Now, that's optimistic.
