I think you'd have to put yourself in the mindset of some clueless
70s music person: "OK, so there are guitars, and, like, the
(sometime, in the Cars' case) singer doesn't have a conventionally
'good' voice...." Against the musical landscape of the late 70s, it
might be enough.
