(TV) burma report

per maurice's request
i saw the first nyc show & it was one of the best concerts i've ever seen. (it's up there w/husker du on the zen arcade tour, minutemen on double nickles, and the neil young ragged glory show w/sonic youth). they did two sets, neither of which were constructed like a "rock" set. (ie the hits at the end.) roger had his marshall on the lip on the stage & played behind it. when he needed feedback & sustain he'd place the body of his guitar against the cab to soak up the vibrations. peter prescott was surrounded by a plexi shield to minimize his stage racket. even tho i had seen both burma & the volcano suns a number of times i had forgot what a truely great drummer he is and i was reminded very quickly. clint conley's bass was loud as fuck. (& to get a clean mix & hear roger i had to remove my earplugs. the earburn was worth it.) yes, they played 3 new songs. they were good. as were the old ones. bob weston was the martin swoope of the tour & he did the job, even hitting martin's key parts when needed. the majority of the crowd were 40 somethings acting like they were 18 again. susan from sonic youth's crew was doing the lights & they were beautiful. for the encore thuston & lee can onstage. thurston couldn't get his amp turned on (i mean it's not like he's never seen one before) finally after some futzing, they did a 4 guitar/drum version of all world cowbody romance. the second encore was a 10 minute ragged but right version of ubu's heart of darkness. go to www.missionofburma.com for set lists, ect. they were as good or better than the 3 times i saw them in their heyday. i just hope some of these shows will be offically released or turn up on the cdr circuit. also the shows are being filmed by the guys who made gimmie shelter. it was well worth the trip from pittsburgh.
