Ahem,
This is a fairly outrageous thing for Edge to say. I remember a kinder, 
gentler U2 quote from years where he says that U2 listened to Television to 
learn how to create tough songs that weren't in heavy metal mould. I think 
its unquestionable that MM was a key album behind early U2 sound. As I don't 
especially like U@ (never have) I might even be tempted to say that they 
dumbed it down and rocked it up for the masses.

Anyway,
Think of the Marquee Moon song, sineous guitar, clever, eliptical lyrics. 
Although admittedly there is some correspondance with the Bauderlaire poem 
of the same name (at least as far as I remember it).

Now compare that with the U2 song, "Elevation"

"A mole/
Digging in a hole/
Digging up my soul"

I rest my case
