nowhere near the likes of the people they are trying to emulate.

Maybe a little Pere Ubu thrown in to the mix, eh? Tim Buckley's jazzy period
comes to mind (and Jeff for that matter). Since nobody with a keyboard-type
device can run out of nice things to say about them, I'll relate something a
dear friend noted upon the airplay of their first single "Creep" - "Man,
they're Pavement for AM radio!" But what the hell, I couldn't resist. They
were the absolute fave of an ex lover who jilted me, so I admit I went
through an "I spit upon you Mr. Thom Yorke phase", but after seeing them on
Saturday Night Live, after a few too many Scorpions (a Chinese restaurant
Rum cocktail served in a bowl), I made a little check mark in the air that
signified that I was now a fan. The next morning however, it was aspirin,
ibuprofen and Lloyd Cole.

As for the Beatles - good but I'll take the Shirelles, Everly bros. and the
Cookies, thanks.
Best wishes,

GL

N.P.
The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine - The Walker Brothers
Unbelievable Guy - Diane Reney
This Little Girl Of Mine - Everly Brothers
Every single f'ing thing he ever played - Phil Ochs
Continental Drifters
Sweet Insanity - Brian Wilson (which segues nicely with ...)
Brutal Youth - Elvis Costello (king-like appearance on The Larry Sanders
Show, #1 reason to pay cable bill)
