I seem to have deleted Phil's post linking to the Steve Hoffman Music Forum, but I noticed this comment there, from "ralphb": 'According to Verlaine, he wanted "Marquee Moon" to have a circular, never ending quality, so he went with the fade.' I don't recall whether I ever read of Tom saying this, but it's exactly how I feel, and it's one among many reasons why I will never get rid of my MM vinyl. The first time I heard the "full stop" ending, I was like "Who the hell screwed this up?" The song is so filled with images of doubling, cycling, returning, that it always seemed virtually _necessary_ to have the return-to-the-start ending (at least on record). Of course it's also the version I heard first....
It's probably been discussed dozens of times on the list before, but how do others feel about this?
