Re: (TV) Interesting Review
"Craftsman" might be damning with faint praise in some circles - but I think
it's true that in addition to his genuine musical genius, RT works hard at his
craft. I believe he puts in regular "office hours" for songwriting when he's
home. I'm reminded of an interview I once saw with Wilt Chamberlain where he
said something like, "All those people who think I had it easy because of my
height weren't there when I was practicing my shooting at 5:00 in the morning."
I do feel that in more recent years RT has become so facile a songwriter and
player, and perhaps such a contented person, that his work rarely has the "soul"
that I feel in earlier records like Pour Down Like Silver (one of my very
favorites).
I'll add one other thing to the discussion: neither Clapton nor Tom can come
close to holding a candle to RT on acoustic guitar, and I'm not only talking
about virtuosity.

Indeed.
I yield to no-one in my admiration of Verlaine but... Verlaine is a stylist,
Thompson is a master craftsman. And he's not lazy, didn't squander his talent
and doesn't treat the people who admire him with disdain. I listen more and more
to RT and less and less to TV.
