thus 'Days" was born. I wish I could cite the exact source on that
one.
From Q&A on Richard's site:
Q: I heard somewhere that the song "Days' was written by playing "Mr
Tambourine Man' backwards, is this true? Was it a painful process to
transcribe the notes by playing it on a reel-to-reel backwards?
A: Yes, this is true. "Days" was built around a riff I had been fooling
with at rehearsal based on the Byrds version of "Mr. Tambourine Man",
when Tom walked in. What he said to me was "Hey, can you play that
backwards?" So I spent about a minute and I turned the riff around and
voila. There was no transcription, there was no reel-to-reel, and it was
most definitely not painful. Unfortunately, Tom found it difficult to
play his part and sing at the same time, so we only played it at half
dozen times live, but it was a lovely thing when we did.

"The captivating main riff in the song has a strange origin. "I had read
that Wagner would write something and then write it out backwards. He'd
have violins play the main theme backwards. I thought that was
interesting. And I always liked The Byrds so I asked Lloyd if he could
play 'Mr. Tambourine Man' backwards. We took that and changed it a
little bit and that became 'Days'."
