As I recall, Hell was pretty unhappy with the final CD - esp. the
mix, as well as "Stray Cat Generation", which he didn't have anything
to do with (but draws from "Blank Generation"). Hell has always been
a perfectionist (witness the lengthy re-recording of BLANK
GENERATION) and the slapdash style of the Dim Stars project was not
to his full liking. I figure the Rhino project is an opportunity to
approach and fix some of those tracks. Still, even the best-possible
DIM STARS can't be better than, say, DESTINY STREET. It's just not
that strong songwriting-wise, even if it has its moments.
"Memo to Marty", Hell's invective-filled tirade against Marty Thau,
was dropped from the CD after threatened legal action.
IMO, the EP they did before the album - complete with the bizarre,
psych-themed, 20-minute "You Gotta Lose" remake - is in many ways
more fun to hear than the final album.
