I think when you talk about a bands politics being skin deep or otherwise it
tends to be a broad statement about the band as a whole, when it is rare
that a band ( all of its members ) actually agrees about such things.

I dont think for one second that Topper was very interested in politic of
any kind. Paul was purely about the look and the attititude and Mick
generally was about guitars and looking the look. Joe was the main political
animal and the others shuffled around behind him and nodded and occasionally
chipped in when a particular topic moved them so.

Look at U2, widely regarded as a big religious based group, when they could
have fallen apart on religion in 1981 when Adam Clayton said he wasn't
interested in it and the band had to make a choice.

I think thats one reason why a bands politics can look skin deep. Sometimes
they are for some of its members.

And thats too much heavy thinking for a bank holiday morning. Will be
substituting heavy thinking for heavy drinking soon enough :o)
