I agree with your assessment of 'the Book of Eternity (etc)' - seems like noise for noise's sake to me; and can't vouch for what his live performances are like these days, but do yourself a favor and check out either of the Fushitsusha live disc sets on PSF (untitled - I think they're PSF #s 3/4 and 15/16), or 'Pathetique', or Haino's solo 'Watashi-Dake?'. 15/16 is my favorite - the classic power trio, creating glorious dark spiralling tunnels of noise.
I'm not sure about their availability - www.forcedexposure.com would have them I bet.
