The Trick? / RE: (TV) Malcolm X (no, really) on savings CBGBs

About 5 weeks ago Maurice posted webpage ("bugmenot.com"
below that allows to bypass having to register at a site in 
order to read its articles, say, The NY Times.

But when I try using this with the link Philip sent it 
seems to fail.  What's the trick?  And if one must for 
some of these sites Aactually register to read, what's 
the quickest/safest way to do it to avoid SPAM etc.?
