(TV) Joss - this wednesday 2/23/05 MAXWELLS. with Snowglobe
The rumours are true and the shows continue.
JOSS will be playing in their home turf @ Maxwell's Hoboken NJ (
_www.maxwellsnj.com_ (http://www.maxwellsnj.com/) ) this Wednesday February
23rd @
9:00 pm. Joss will be opening for the SNOWGLOBE.
Snowglobe is heavily influenced by the sounds of Elephant 6. Warm, poppy,
psychedelic-y, and even a little bit hippy. They also blend in shades of jazz
and hard rock, with touches of horns, strings, bells, whistles, and whatever
else was lying around the house to create a masterpiece of music that's all
their own
All Music Guide December 2004 had these words about Joss.
JOSS/If Not For the Hovering... On If Not For the Hovering... indie rockers
Joss rest sultry, jazz-tinged romps like "Good Weather" alongside minimalist,
riff-sturdy keepers like "MM." Although the upbeat "Mojave Desert Highrise"
b
complete with jagged chords, military drumming and distorted vocals b is
both bold and inviting, nothing here can beat the self-deprecating sway of
"Rumour Of A Monkey Clown." There's an intoxicating lure beneath that song's
oddball proclamations (like "[I'm] stealing looks from a boogie down
laundrymat")
that keep otherwise solid tunes like "Mooncake" and the The-inspired
"Careless" from measuring up. But Joss have plenty to be proud of with If Not
For the
Hovering... despite the fact that the dour late album offering "Good Grace"
is a sluggish, endless stab at art rock. by John D. Luerssen
MAGNET (August-September 2004)
JOSS/If Not For the Hovering... . Armed with enough spooky tremolo-guitar
effects and slinky maracas to put Friends of Dean Martinez out of business,
this NYC-area trio provides the soundtrack for a burning cantina. Think of
Joss
as Yo La Tengo's evil cowpoke twin, with Ambrose Liu singing in a
flatter-than-Ira monotone and sculpting menacing guitar epics
Hope to see you at the show.
