I recall the 1987 Musician Magazine interview touches on this topic,
although he's kind of vague. IIRC, he talks about just sort of
whacking away at the guitar or a little keyboard, recording it all to
cassette and then later going through the cassettes to see what might
be worth developing. But I do recall him saying that the method is
"real different" from song to song.
