(TV) $6,000,000,000 man
Wow, you sound so cynical about the music biz. Thank goodness the Monkees
would never fall into that trap!

BTW, I think the same can said about art critics control over struggling
artists. It is the art critics who determine what is art, that then gives
the work of artists (visual medium) value. That value is then put into
play and traded as a commodity among consumers.
Who's to say what is art? I guess it would be the art critics.

actually, i think that what happens is that the record
company / marketing folks determine what most appeals
to the masses, and then create acts to fit that
description. it's not that britney spears just "was"
and someone decided to promote her heavily. she made
herself available to marketers and was manufactured to
fit the mass market's wants. sex, visuals, whatever
image they wanted her to portray, and whatever music
would be acceptable to the most folks. no serious
artist is ever going to be able to do that. you would
have to be pliable and soul-less. and of course
photo-ready.
