Re: (TV) Collectors' Choice/Check out Keith's posted article/Proposition for non-USA listers



I haven't heard the Collectors' Choice CD, but if it really sounds so
different from the Clearmountain mix, the chances are they've used the
wrong master tape, and it is an alternate mix. It's quite possible that
the original master tapes have disappeared. Mastering, or the lack of
it, shouldn't make too much difference.

I think the whole 'make it sound louder than everything else' thing is a
bit of a red herring here -- it's something that affects new releases,
but there's no reason for reissue labels to get involved (the reason for
it is mainly that labels want their records to stand out on the radio).
That kind of mastering also costs an arm and a leg if done
professionally. If it *is* a mastering error, it's more likely that CC
simply tried to do it themselves on the cheap and ballsed it up.
