(TV) new to list
Hi, I'm new to the list--well I've been lurking for a couple of weeks,
but still new, so I thought I'd introduce myself.
I've had the good fortune to have seen Television play at the
Whiskey in Hollywood in '77 or so. I was a student at Caltech at the
time and had heard some buzz about the band somewhere, so convinced a
friend to drive us over there to see the show. I was very impressed
with the physicality of the playing, though I was completely unfamiliar
with the music ("prove it ... you're just a fag ... confidentially" ...
"television ... goes to my head ..." --that's what I remember).
Later in the 80s I got to see TV play in Austin (where I now live).
What I remember most about this show is that my brother's drunken friend
kept drunkenly yelling out "Marquee Moon" until Tom played it. I have
no doubts that this is the reason he never came back to town ...
Also in the early 80s I was in a band called the Kamikaze Refrigerators
(look for our vinyl album, Happy Thoughts, cover art by Frank Kozik,
produced by Spot) until I got married and became a science teacher.
These days I teach physics and have started listening to music again and
find myself seeking out stuff from the old days that still appeals to
me: Wire, Ubu, the Jam, John Foxx-era Ultravox, as well as Televison
and Tom Verlaine, etc.
Anyway, I've been pleasantly surprised at the discourse on this list so
far, so I guess I'll stay on ....
Luis
