(TV) Keith's promise / New paradigm: SACDs?
First, an upfront apology to those on list not too keen
on discussions of high fidelity or technology of gear
(may want to hit your DELETE button now).
I think that Keith should rescind his promise (below)
otherwise the few of us 'analogue nuts' on list won't
have you (and Neil Y.?) as impassioned spokesperson(s).
I sometimes get a kick out of Keith's occasional anti-digital
rants although I also sympathize with the arguments on the
other side about convenience, practicality, etc. of the cd
format.
Maybe the new SCD/SACD (Direct Stream Digital/Super Audio
Compact Disc) will be technological breakthrough[?] that
will satisfy both schools of thought. Some claim it combines
the 'best' features/qualities of digital with the best
features/qualities of analogue in a new format. Most important
of all: SACD will be compatible with 'old' cds/players and
vice-versa.
And maybe it will rain quarters! Maybe SCD/SACD is just
another expensive hi-fi-industry hype.
" ...The DSD analog-to-digital converter produces a one-bit pulse
train that remarkably mimics an analog wave. In this manner, DSD
encoding combines the advantages of digital recording with the
well-regarded characteristics of analog sound. ...The digital
equivalent of straight wire with gain.
A 1-bit system, DSD encodes music at an astonishing 2,822,400
samples per second, resulting in more than just superb frequency
response and dynamic range. Capable of exposing the inner detail
of choral ensembles, the reverberation trailing from a guitar chord,
and even the acoustic space surrounding an instrument, DSD technology
reproduces every nuance of sound with incredible ease and clarity.
When attempting to capture and reproduce pure audio, less is more.
While traditional PCM [digital] processing degrades and compromises
quality through the use of multiple filters, Direct Stream Digital
processing eliminates excessive filtration, simplifying the sound
capture process and allowing a 1-bit signal to be recorded directly."
