(TV) Echo (Round 1)
From: "Casey, Leo J" <CaseyL@VOLPE.DOT.GOV>
"Ocean Rain" does not have a soul; it is completely devoid [pronounced as
the non-French 'Voidoid' (or 'android')] of feeling >with the exception of
affectation. I have met/heard the Bunnymen and >thy music is called
prententiousness. "Ocean Rain" is a fuggin' >abomination---even the string
orchestra sounds cold and sterile---the >equal to Marquee Moon, my arse.
[Jay, you'd better bring your boxing >gloves to NYC on the 19th :-) ]
Summing up: I like Television's & TV's music; I don't like E & the B; >I
respect the fact that some will agree with those opinions, and that >some
will disagree, but I will defend to the >death---if necessary--->your right
to have 'em.
Leo, Who's going to be helping you in your corner?
I much as I respect your opinion on this list about Television and TV. We've
got Eric, Jay and myself and I'm sure several other people
who are Echo fans who would be up to the challenge of defending our
admiration for the band.
Television was the first punk band I was obsessed with back in 79, after my
initial introduction into the rock work by Queen, when
I got a copy of "Adventure". It was several years later before I could find
a copy of "Marquee Moon". Of course, there wasn't much material for me at
this time to be obsessed with except for "Adventure".
Over the next few months I also became obsessed with The Doors and then Echo
in 1982. This trio represents a high point of my life, starting college in
78 and graduating in 83. These three bands were ripe for college kids at
that point in time. Of course, punk and post-punk was not popular and we
were considered freaks, but it was a growing thriving atmosphere and we only
heard the best from the Europe and Australia. The Dooes were becoming
immensely popular which culminated with the "Apocalyse Now" soundtrack and
"No One Here Gets Out Alive" book on the "legend".
I haven't become obssessed with any other band until the advent of getting
my own home computer and finding other obscure 80's bands like
The Comsat Angels, The Sound, The Chameleons, Sad Lovers & Giants, and The
Essence. Although I knew some of these bands music, i didn't know much about
the band themselves or their fans. All these bands have a "passion" and a
"soul" (yes, Leo, even Echo) and a certain ethic or spirit.
Of course, a lot of the more popular post punk bands: Joy Division, Bauhaus,
The Smiths, U2, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Erasure, The Waterboys, etc. are all
favorites of mine too, but they don't touch my soul the way Echo, The Doors,
and Television did. All have some of that "arty" aspect to them and some may
be an acquired taste. But they all share something in common.
I can understand you not liking Echo because it isn't your cup of tea.
But I think it goes further than just an acquired taste for you, there seems
to be some hostility or anger. Why?
I just read the forthcoming new Echo book, something interesting. That
there was some talk that Echo's label, Kordova, attempted to procure the
rights to re-release "Marquee Moon" in the early 80's after being out of
print. I remember that I couldn't find the album for several years after its
release. But I also remember reading here that MM was never out of print.
Which is it?
Henry
