Members of both the Monkees and The Byrds knew how to play their own
instruments and did so on record. With the Byrds, I believe it was only "Mr
Tambourine Man", their first single, on which only Roger McGuinn played and
the rest were session players. True, they picked Michael Clarke for his
looks and not his drumming ability. You need only listen to PreFlyte to hear
them while they were learning to play their instruments. As for the Monkees,
certainly Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork ( Thorkelson) were musicians. Tork
was formerly of the Greenwich Village folk scene.
