has anyone here read 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' and thought M. Azerrad's
writing style was bordering god-awful? i am enjoying the book very much for
it's content (which is mainly due to the greatness of the bands and the
absurdity of their antics), but am disappointed with the delivery,
nonetheless. a friend who is also reading the book and i both have come to the
conclusion that the book is marred mainly because of the author's apparent
jackassedness. his writing just seems amateurish, and somewhat uninspired,
even for a documentary. i also notice many unnecessary Nirvana references
(presumably because he cannot get over the fact that he wrote their definitive
biography): such as in the Sonic Youth chapter where it is mentioned that the
band enjoyed the Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz' in the mid 80's, Azerrad then
adds 'by some strange coincidence, Nirvana would cover (the song) as the a-
side of their first single'. no Mike, that's not really a very strange
coincidence, let alone one worthy to include as part of the book. anyhow, it's
not that big of a deal, i guess. there are more examples and i thought they
were all kind of funny. tho, i don't want to sound to harsh towards old
Azerrad, because his efforts are appreciated.
as for new music, i've been mighty happy to see the 1st C.O.B. album reissued,
as well as a bunch of Kraftwerk (on vinyl). the new No Neck Blues Band
cd, 'Sticks and Stones May Break My Bones...', disappoints, despite what the
Wire says. their earlier stuff is just plain better and more interesting. they
have a real laughable track of rock jamming, and, for the most part, they
appear to be trying to do what Tower Recordings already did years ago (in NYC
as well, no less!), only not nearly as good. the title of the cd is pretty
bad, too.
a pal of mine, Joshua Burkett, just put out his 3rd record and i think it's
marvelous. Forced Exposure might have it listed under Joshua, called Gold
Cosmos, and it's delectable acid folk. his second, Life, Less, Lost, is
superb. support him, people!
i also got (only to give away for xmas) and listened to the new Charley Patton
box set, and man...
