A fine LP. I'd lucked out and saw them on their '87 or '88 (can it
really be that long ago?) reunion tour with Chris Cutler *and* R.
Scott Krauss on drums. It was mighty. I'd have to say, though, that
the best show of theirs I ever saw was on their first '90s tour with
Tom Hermann back on guitar. Sweaty, rocking, amazing. The '70s
stuff is phenomenal, but the late '80s and '90s stuff is well worth
the attention, too.
I
had lost interest in Ubu after DUB HOUSING and never bothered to pick up
anything recent.
_New Picnic Time_. Sure, it's supposed to be "difficult," but it's a
lot more listenable than its rep, and it's a mind-blower in its own
way. And there are some very moving moments on that disc as well.
(Last one with Tom Hermann before '98's _Pennsylvania_, IIRC.)
So, that's it for me. How about my fellow Television fans? Anything
post-holidays on the turntable/CD player/8-track?
Got some nifty stuff on wire and wax cylinder... Actually, two CDs
have been standing out so far:
Chris Bell's _I Am the Cosmos_ (ex-Big Star, died tragically young in
an auto accident, but not before releasing this slab of pop/rock
beauty...the slow version of the title track is just amazing)
Dizzy Gillespie _Plays Paris_ ~1953, on Vogue. It doesn't get any
hipper than this.
Anyone else?
