Their 'ironic' period bothered me the most. If you have to tell people over 
and over that you are being *ironic*, then you're not doing it very well. I 
think of U2 being like the 'new wave' Rolling Stones but not in a good way. 
It is, like the stones and the blues, they took the punk/new wave sound, 
i.e, guitar sonics from Verlaine, PIL and Magazine (also a big part of the 
Radiohead sound I think) combined with bible basher lyrics and sold it back 
to a mass audince.
