Re: (TV) Bowery show

Phil said: "I'm not saying he couldn't have been significantly more rehearsed, but in a way, I'm impressed with his willingness to go out on a limb and improvise - lyrically and musically - in a live setting."

I completely agree with Phil's sentiment. I felt like Sunday was a really special show, yes, it was messy, yes, it was way under-rehearsed. BUT, and this is a big but, there were at least three moments that really transcended the circumstances of gig and it the whole thing to another level(Words from the Front, Wicked Charms and the Instrumental that followed) and personally that's what I look for in a gig and damn the mistakes. I don't think that I really want picture-perfect live versions, I like the the way Tom is happy to take risks with his songs and let them go somewhere else. Personally I be quite happy to see Tom play with exactly that band again, I think, given the rehearshal time they had, Alan Licht did pretty well keeping up with Tom's whims and fancies, let's face it, he's not the most predictable of guitar players. I also liked the sound of the band, they weren't tight like 76-78 Television or other TV bands, but they had a charming rickety sound that had a whiff of early television or the Velevet Underground or Love. Fuck it, I'd have happily paid $20 more for a WTC charity without getting to see Sonic Youth or Tom Verlaine, so we were definitely onto a winner with Sunday's gig.
