(TV) Clean tone/Beat Willie to Death/ Leo Threatens To Write Essay on "Dreamtime's" Genesis & Production/Q for Maurice

Yes---I I'm beating to death the 'Willie-Leo' debate on
production values of Verlaine post-first solo records,
but bear with me for a minute:

I would argue that 'production' includes ALL choices of
instruments and (other) technology---including, in fact
especially, tube equipment or selection of a particular
recording studio for its 'sound'; etc.. etc.), that is made by
the musician/producer (in this case Verlaine--even when
there's another co-producer name (e.g., Fred) on TV solo
records we know it's Tom making the final decisions).

Given this and what Dan said below----(and even
leaving out for the moment TV's incredible use of
multi-tracking---more upcoming on that facet), I still
maintain that anyone who believes or infers that
'Dreamtime' would have been "..more exciting"
with 'better' (aka less) production and that it has
"..shitty/questionable production" is, with all due
respect, daft.

I stand by my original claim that for 'Dreamtime' you
can't separate its production from its music----they
are one and the same.

Leo (who just doesn't know when to quit)

PS: Sorry---but the list can expect another post on "'Dreamtime"
and its production to follow later this week when I have the time
to sift thru my paper Archives for details from Verlaine and others
on the whats/whys/hows behind the production of this piece of
music (or maybe I'll just ask Verlaine, himself, at the Bowery
Ballroom Sunday; I'm sure he'd love to discuss production values
with a fan.) .

PPS: To Maurice: Just curious--Are any of the sibilant problems
on the vocals and other possible production deficiencies
(bad sounding synth-stuff?) on "Cover" ameliorated by listening
to vinyl versions?

"On Television/Verlaine tones - Fender guitars
used with small tube amps turned way up are a
big part of the classic Marquee Moon sound. But
I think that Verlaine has struggled to achieve the
'complex' bold-clean sound he wants (I think he's
done pretty damn well, I'm just going on what I've
read in various interviews he's given). Heavy strings
and Fender Jazzmasters and strats are the starting
point but I also think that Verlaine tends to use
some kind of tube pre-amp in the studio at least,
old echos, a pedal called the mini-boogie, that kind
of thing. I think that compression is another part
of the equation that doesn't gets mentioned often
enough. I think there's some fairly heavy
compression/limiting going on at the recording
stage of TV tracks - these would be classic 60s
units - like those used by the Byrds for that clean
sustain sound in 8 Miles high. I never seen any
comprehensive list of the kind of pedals uses live but
it sounds to me that he uses a Compressor pedal for
a clean boost, which can also be used to kick the Ibanez
Tubescreamer overdrive pedal he definitely has on stage
at all times into more of a floaty (woo, technical) sustain
tone. ...."
