"Darker"? Well, depends how you look at it - in the original, Molly Ringwald
and her devoted friend Ducky get together at the end, and shame the rest of the
school by being outstanding dancers (or something like that). Happy ending.
Audiences loved Andrew McCarthy, however, so they trashed the original ending
and filmed an incongruous ending where rich-boy McCarthy *does* get together
with Ringwald, and they invent an unbelievably hot bimbo for Ducky at the very
last minute.
Hughes reversed the genders of the characters and made a movie with the
"correct" ending for "Some Kind of Wonderful" a year or two later, although all
of the actors were about 25, and it shows. (All of the characters are also
named on a Rolling Stones theme - "Amanda Jones", "Watts", "Keith", etc).

Yeah, she'll probably glaze over when you get to "It's not really clear why the
record was rejected, but shifting pop-music tastes combined with a reluctance
for the broader market to embrace Verlaine's unique but tuneful songwriting
style may have exacerbated tensions with Fontana even before Bascombe finished
mixing the tracks..."
