I'm with you on this one. I saw the Strokes @Don Hills last spring (I
think)they had lots of elements that make a good band but there was no
synthesis or desire to push it forward - no spark of originality that turns
the base clay into a rock prometheus. I.e it sounded like a Pixies bit
here,
VU bit there, TV bit there. Good bar band but not the saviours of the pop
universe IMHO.

after all the crazed hype re: the strokes, i gotta say i was let down
myself...yr right, it ain't bad but man, it's stretching it to say their
sound is nyc ca. 77 or even vu/stooges axis like mosta the press/crits are
wailing & their songs are...well....sorta rock & roll pastiche....
white stripes, on the other hand, have thoroughly lived up to (& actually
surpassed) the hype....that jack white is a damn fine songwriter & alotta
the songs off the new one sound timeless....
