Just to reinforce this, I live on 12th street and Ave A and certainly 
everything there is fine there, if horribly quiet. I walked down to Houston 
Street last night to meet a friend who had been very shaken by events - she 
saw the second plane hit the WTC - however, everything seems fine down at 
least as far as the SOHO/NOHO area. Houston is heavily guarded by police but 
certainly if you live there they will let you through.

I'm from the UK and I have seen at first-hand the after effects soon after 
two bomb attacks in London but I've never seen anything like this. The sheer 
scale is mind-boggling, you can taste the dust in the air from two miles 
away.

What really bought it home to me was meeting firefighters regrouping on 
Houston that night, many of them talking about missing colleagues that had 
gone into the tower before the first collapse
