Re: (TV) Stephen Malkamus

man, you oughtn't be jealous...i sorta dug some of the early
singles & maybe half of "slanted", mostly cos they seemed to
be one of the few (esp. american) bands carrying on the
groove me smith (amongst others...anyone remember the fire
engines?) initiated....
but from there on, it's a steep slide downhill....do you
realize malkmus often writes his lyrics a day or 2 before
recording em & he's used the very "avant-garde" cut-up
method!
wow!
this is "art rock"???
or is that "art punk"?
i believe we hit pavement a while back on a discussion
regarding "soul" in music...something, if malkmus has at
all, he works mighty hard to conceal...

Evidently Steve is paying more attention to his guitar playing on this record and the song "Church on White" sounds, to my ears like something Tom might play -- a terrific guitar solo that ends far too soon. While I loved "Slanted and Enchanted" I was never that big a Pavement fan after that because it seemed to me as though they weren't really trying, always hiding behind the iron(y) curtain, and that drove me crazy. I've always struggled like all hell to squeeze every drop from the single gram of talent I have and here was a guy who had loads of talent but seemingly couldn't be arsed. Or am I just jealous?
