Hi Folks ! I'm Russ and I have been a Televison fan
since I bought Adventure way back in 1979 (?!) when I was a senior in
High School. I don't exactly recall what inspired me to buy the album - I
think it had to do with Pete Frames' Rock Family Tree's book where he had a
pretty interesting description of Television; and kindled the legend and romance
of this band in my mind - the band by which time had already folded. When I
listened to Adventure, I immediately recognized a band that I would always love;
guitar rifts and licks that sounded like what I was trying to play ( I
am a guitarist );and since I was in love with the guitar playing of Neil Young,
I thought I heard sounds that were distinctly Neil Young-ish - all of this
in my naiive 18 year old mind.
So, fast forward about 21+ years . I still play
guitar ( a lot better than when I was 18), none of the bands I was in ever
went anywhere ,but it wasn't meant to be anyway. My appreciation for Television
has only grown over the years. I am really excited to hear that they might play
a gig in England in April - is that definite or just a rumor ? I just got
Richard Lloyd's new record and it sounds totally cool ! Do any of those guys
ever post to this list ? Richard is awesome - he's answered a couple of my
emails to him. What a regular guy! So now a days, I will buy a record if some
reviewer says ' they go into this televisionesque guitar duel' or some such
reviewer idioms. On the basis of some such review, I bought this great
record by a band called Eleventh Dream Day called "Stalled Parade" (2000)
- and sure enough this band sounds like a cross between Television, Dream
Syndicate, and , of course, Crazy Horse ! Okay, just about spent here... Lastly,
I saw Tom Verlaine and Jimmy Ripp (?) at the Seattle EMP last fall
performing music composed by Verlaine for these old black and white movie short
subjects. It was great I tell you ! Anyway I look forward to reading all the
interesting things, ideas, annecdotes, ect that all you Television people have
for our perusal .
thanks, Russ
