Ah, Moon Martin! I just got his first two albums on CD - had them on vinyl
for years. The first, "Shots From A Cold Nightmare," features his versions
of "Bad Case of Lovin' You," "Victim of Romance" and "Cadillac Walk" plus
an
all star band (Willie Loco Alexander on piano, Phil Seymour on drums) and
doesn't sound a thing like Television, but it's much better than you'd
think, given the ubiquity of the Robt. Palmer cover.
I saw Moon open for Blondie at the Paradise in Boston and was really
impressed. He's a little guy, and his guitarists in the Ravens - including
Jude Cole, one of the many Harold Stattsens of rock 'n' roll - both played
Gibsons and towered over him. But when Moon played a solo on his Strat, he
unleashed the most hellacious (in a good way ) overdriven sound I've ever
heard! "Shots" has been issued with the 2nd, "Escape from Domination" on a
two-fer import CD and is well worth picking up, IMHO.
Re: The Fender Lead series - they were another attempt to be taken
seriously
by Fender in the Gibson-dominated market of the '70s - the only other
notable users I can think of were Elliot Easton from the Cars and Al, the
lead player in my sister's boyfriend's band, the Rockids. Uh, you never
heard of them?

Hey, guys! Let's discuss music instead of nuclear conflicts!
Russ Van Roy was brave and mentioned the guitars of Eagles. (And there has
been a lot of talking about Neil Y. In my opinion no big similarities to
TV,
but at least NY has a very personal guitarstyle.) I will take a big risk
now, but I don't think you will yell that much on me as on Russ. On german
satellite channel WDR they show old (and new) live-rock every Saturday
night. A year ago or so they showed an old concert with Moon Martin. Yes, I
know, it's just simple pop, but these guitars were really something. I was
totally knocked. A little of the same "naive" Lou Reed-style, LOUD solos
and
only a few tones. Don't know if there has been any other well known artists
playing these shortlived Fender Lead I and Fender Lead II issues, but these
guys really knew how to use them. I think Moon Martin released an album
called Street Fever or something with one of these guitarheads on the
cover.
(One can suspect a pretty big sponsorcontract.) I think Moon Martin himself
used the Lead I, the one with the humbucker. They didn't have much in
common
with TV, except for the label Fender and the fact they had a lot of class.
(Hope this didn't disturb too many of you.)
